I joined the
Saybrook faculty in 1990 after having been an adjunct professor for many years and having served on the founding board of directors. I teach courses in personality theory, ethics in psychotherapy, humanistic psychology and psychotherapy, group therapy, and citizen diplomacy. I am particularly interested in approaches to psychotherapy and human science research that affirm meaning-creating, growth-seeking, experiencing and relating persons.
As an existential-humanistic psychologist I try to counter reductionistic, medical model, manipulative trends in psychology and managed care and research with approaches that honor our higher human potential. My mentors have included Jim Bugental, Abraham Maslow, Rollo May, and Carl Rogers. I am also Clinical Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Distinguished Adjunct Professor at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology.
I am a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology and a Fellow of four divisions of the American Psychological Association. I have long supported peace psychology and citizen diplomacy with the former Soviet Union, making five trips there since 1983 and maintaining current contacts.
I teach at Saybrook because it is the graduate school most dedicated to the furtherance of my interests and the work of other existential-humanistic psychologists.
